Apple, already working on its products to come within 5 years, plans to launch its first foldable iPhone in 2023 according to some rumors. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, accustomed to revealing Apple’s secrets, has just published a note about a foldable iPhone 15.
The iPhone 13 has not yet been released and discussions are already going well on iteration 15. It is analyst Ming-Chi Kuo at TF International Securities, often precise in his statements, who mentions the launch of a Foldable iPhone 15 in 2023. “We expect Apple to likely release a foldable iPhone with an 8-inch QHD + flexible Oled display in 2023, with SDC. [Samsung Displays] as the exclusive display supplier and Samsung Foundry as the exclusive DDI foundry supplier. Based on the capacity plan requested by Apple, we expect foldable iPhone shipments to reach 15-20 million units in 2023 ”. With an 8-inch slab, the foldable iPhone would grow larger than the iPad mini (7.9 inches) and Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2 (7.6 inches).
According to Kuo, Apple will use silver nanowires for the touchscreen interface, which will give the company a “long-term competitive advantage” over current Y-OCTA (Youm On-Cell Touch AMOLED) technology. Samsung. “Future foldable devices will require touchscreen technology that supports multiple folds (compared to just one in current foldable smartphones), a roll-up screen, medium to large, and durability,” writes Ming-Chi Kuo. “Comparing the advantages of the above specifications, the silver nanowire is similar or better than SDC’s Y-Octa.”
Two folding iPhone prototypes
La has experimented with the silver nanowire for years in iPads and Apple Watches, with display technology more recently making its way into HomePod and HomePod mini, Kuo says. Durability was an issue with the first series of foldable smartphones, with Samsung delaying the launch of its Galaxy Fold in 2019 to address a number of engineering issues. It was previously reported that Apple is testing two different folding iPhone prototypes, one having a dual-screen design and the other opening vertically like a clamshell mobile. This report claimed that Apple’s biggest sticking point was the hinge, which Ming-Chi Kuo did not mention in his analysis.

These announcements, as precise as they are, foreshadow the arrival on the market of a product almost similar to that offered by Samsung, the Galaxy Fold. The Korean firm is also planning the release of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 foldable smartphone for the summer of 2021.
